Bangladesh 's Supreme Court has sentenced Abdul Kader Mullah, a senior leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, to death for war crimes during the 1971 independence war. The court rejected a life sentence imposed earlier by a war crime tribunal.
Critics say the verdict has been made under intense political pressure. One of Mullah's lawyers has described it as nothing more than a political show aiming at removing an Islamist political party ahead of the next election.
